How to tell real leather from fake: five checks you can do in the shop

"Genuine leather" is a legal term, not a quality grade. It covers everything from the strong outer layer of a hide down to shavings glued onto backing cloth. Since the label will not settle it, here is what will.

1. The edge

This is the single most reliable check. Find a cut edge — the rim of a wallet flap, the inside of a strap hole — and look closely. Real leather is a compressed mat of fibres, so a raw edge looks slightly fuzzy and the colour runs all the way through. Synthetic leather is a coating on cloth, so the edge shows a clean plastic layer sitting on a woven backing, often with threads visible.

Well-finished leather goods seal their edges, which hides this. But sealed edges are themselves a good sign: nobody bothers sealing edges on fake material.

2. The grain

Real hide is irregular. Pores vary in size and spacing, and there are faint stretch marks, scars or wrinkles. Synthetic grain is printed from a plate, so the same pattern repeats. Look at two areas an inch apart — if they match exactly, it is printed.

3. The smell

Leather smells of leather: warm, slightly sweet, a bit like a shoe shop. Synthetic smells of plastic or chemicals, or of nothing much. This test is less reliable on heavily coated leather, which can smell faintly of paint, so use it alongside the others rather than on its own.

4. A drop of water

Put a single drop of water on an inconspicuous spot. Real leather absorbs it slowly and darkens; the mark fades as it dries. Synthetic leather lets the drop sit on the surface, and it wipes off completely. Ask permission before doing this to something you have not bought.

5. Weight and warmth

Pick it up. Leather is denser than a fabric-backed coating, so a leather wallet feels heavier than it looks. Hold it for a few seconds and it takes your body heat; PU stays cool and slightly clammy.

The vocabulary, briefly

• Full grain — the outermost layer with its natural surface left intact. Strongest, ages best, most expensive.
• Top grain — the same layer lightly sanded and coated to even it out. Still strong.
• Genuine leather — a catch-all. Often split leather with a finish applied.
• Split leather — the softer lower layer left after the top is removed. Usually embossed to imitate grain.
• Bonded leather — scraps ground up and glued to a backing. Leather content, not leather behaviour.
• PU / faux / vegan leather — polyurethane on fabric. No hide at all.

One thing the checks will not tell you

How well it is made. Real leather cut badly and glued together will still fall apart. Once you have established the material, look at the seams, the lining and whether the piece closes flat. Price is a rough guide to that — we broke it down in what each price band gets you in Bangladesh.
